    Default Central AC Recommendations? Thanks.

My two Central AC units are on their last legs. I want to replace them before that new coolant law goes into affect.

My units have moss and other crap growing on the cooling fins and they're old...one unit was made in July of 1989. So my guess is they're not very efficient.

So I have a air handler in the basement for the first floor and a air handler in the attic to handle the 2nd floor. These handlers only handle AC. Heat is via forced hot water.

Each floor is about 1000 sq-ft.

What would be a good Energy Star unit to look at?

    Thanks.

Carrier makes a very good unit and Goodman has come a long way and gives you good value for your $$. You should talk to several Contractors (at least 5) in your area and get quotes from all. Also make sure they do a load Calc. to make sure your unit is being sized correctly.

You can go with 410 but Your air handler, condensor and lineset would have to be changed, some supply houses have lineset cleaner to use in case of a burnout but I'm not sure if it would work for what you want.
