I've had problems where water drips around my walk-out basement sliding glass door. Today my curtain rod hangers came out because the drywall wasn't so dry.

This problem has plagued me for quite some time, sometimes it rains and no dripping, other times it drips and sometimes it pours out. But I think I have finally figured out that it happens whenever the gutter above this door is overflowing.

I know I need to keep the gutters cleaned out, but I think that perhaps my gutters were not installed properly. When I look at them, I see the bare wood behind my gutters. Isn't there supposed to be some sort of protection from when the gutters are overflowing? Shouldn't the water leak out the front side of the gutter before it goes out the back side?

Anyway, what is the best way for me to fix this? Is it possible for a computer geek to fix a leaky gutter?
