Question Mystery Pipe - anyone know what this is for?

After doing some demo in the basement of my 1946 Cape Cod home, my husband and I discovered a copper/iron pipe(?) (uncapped, without threads) protruding from the poured cemement floor. The location of this pipe is in the back left corner of the basement, and protrudes approximately 2-3 inches, at a slight angle. We have city sewer, an electric cooktop, and hot water radiators for heat. None of these connections are close to this mystery pipe. Anyone have a clue what this pipe is and if we should do something about it?

My guess is that there was a soapstone (or similar) sink in the basement and you are looking at the drain pipe. Is there a source nearby for faucets? Is this near the laundry hookups? Those would be clues that it might be a sink drain.
