Re: finding a home builder
IMHO, good tradesmen don't generally advertise to get work or stay busy, word of mouth is all they need. That being said, the best place to start looking is with trusted family and friends and coworkers. There has to be someone within your circle that has had at least a major renovation done. Start there.
It would be best to find a new construction builder rather than a remodeling contractor because as similar as they may seem, a new build takes a different skill set and business acumen than renovations. It's not that tradesmen can't do both, generally they specialize in one or the other and problems usually occur for those making the switch the first few times.
Contacting the local chapter of the National Association of Home Builders may provide leads to competent builders in your area. http://www.nahb.org/
Considering that you're building your own home, one would assume that you'll be working with an architect or draftsman to come up with the plans. They should have leads to builders to suit your needs. Interior designers often have a list of contractors as well.
I suffer from CDO ... Its like OCD, but in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!!!
