Default Re-installing Beveled glass panels on Exterior Doors

I am refinishing an exterior store double door set that held the large glass panels in with wood trim. I did not see any hint of old putty or glazing compound when I stripped the doors.I am wondering how to go about replacing the glass: whether the panels should lie on a bed of putty, etc. and how is that going to affect the finished height of the wood strips once replaced? Is there a thin rubber / silicone product that is used on commercial doors that would be a better choice?
Thanks for your time in considering my project. Susan

Glaziers often use a type of double faced tape to set window glass in the sash or frame. I am not sure where you get the stuff, perhaps at a glass shop.
