Hi. We are in the process of demoing our mantel in our 1908 Colonial Revival (we think) home. Everything original to the house is very simple from the molding to the matchstick floors. We are trying to undo a bad remodel that put in a funky stucco fireplace that seems pretty obvious not to match the rest of the house. The only problem is that we do not know what type of mantel to go back to since the original mantel is gone.
We are looking for suggestions on what type of wood mantel to build/install. We're thinking simple, simple, simple. Current thoughts are to get rid of the upside down stucco triangle from the ledge up and just leaving flat wall there. Then, adding a simple wood mantel piece that goes from roughly the current ledge down through the existing brick (we'll remove the black chimney tool piece). Attached are pics for reference. Thoughts, pictures and/or websites would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!
