Default Staining floors that have been previously tiled

My kitchen floors are heart pine which were tiled about 45 years ago when a "tar" was used. I have heard that this "tar" will interact with the stain and could create black spots if I sand, stain and seal the floor.

Thumbs up Re: Staining floors that have been previously tiled

Hi, I found this stuff called GOOF OFF that removes the glue and does not affect the wood. The only pain in the butt is the scraping but its well worth it. I am still trying to figure out how to get the white marks off my hardwood floor that had tile on it first
Good luck and hope it goes well

That black, tar-like substance was under my linoleum, also. I soaked it with water and DAWN dish soap. It came up with the $30 sc****r from Home Depot, found in the flooring department. Let the dish soap work for 10-12 minutes, but sc**** wet, do not let it dry out. Black stuff gets soft, then hard. Will re-soften if you re-soak.
