    Default replacing my countertops

I want to remove the laminate-covered countertop myself and replace it. I don't know where to begin. it's a small area- but silestone, which I wanted, costs $3000 despite the small area. can't afford that plus installation- any ideas about what an unskilled but willing person can do on their own? Thanks!

Do I just go to a lumber place with the measurements and they will be able to create a plywood surface for the countertop, and then tile over it?
