    Default dead Circuit

I have an open circuit in a back bedroom. From looking at the wiring in the crawl space it appears that a wire comes out of the box and goes to an outlet in the room making it the first outlet on the circuit. Another wire comes out of the outlet box into the crawl space and connects to the rest of the circuit. I removed the plug and separated all 4 wires. When I attach my meter to the leads I get power when I connect the black lead that seems to come from the panel to the common that goes to the rest of the circuit. Any idea what's wrong or how to proceed? Thanks.

Make sure the blackwires are attached to the brass colored screw terminals and white wires attached to the silver colored screw terminals on the side of the receptacle and not to the holes in the back.
