    Default Ceiling Insulation in Kitchen

    We have our washer & dryer upstairs, and the hose fell out of the drain and flooded a few rooms upstairs and the kitchen downstairs (we could not get the water to turn off so we ended up calling the Fire Department!). The water went through the light canisters in the kitchen. The Insurance Company repair people came out with huge fans (4 days of this!!!), pulled out the insulation, and made several large holes in the kitchen ceiling to dry everything out. Before we drywall the kitchen ceiling…..MY QUESTION: How do we replace the insulation? What kind of insulation is the best to use? Is this something a homeowner can do without professional help? Thanks for any suggestions and/or advice.

    Just curious ....... Why is there insulation in the kitchen ceiling?
    The repairs should be covered by the insurance company which includes replacing the insulation .... if needed.

    There was a lot of insulation pulled out when the insurance company was here to dry out everything. Why wouldn't there be insulation? Wouldn't insulation reduce the noise from upstairs? Also, the insurance company will pay, but we would like to save some of the money we received and just do it ourselves, if possible.

    Yep ... insulation does help with sound control .... was curious since it isn't common .... at least around here .... to find insulation in interior spaces.

    Installing the batt insulation between the upper joists can be easy to do. Insulation will come in 2 widths .... for 14.5 inch cavities ( 16 inch on center framing spacing ) and 22.5 inch cavities ( 24 inch on center framing spacing ) along with different R value .... the higher the R value the thicker the batts will be and the more sound control. Likely your framing is 16 inch on center.

    The batts will be placed in the space between the joist and to some degree will stay there by a friction fit. Depending on how long between the insulation is in place and when the drywall gets installed you might install some wire ( clothes hanger wire ) cut at 16 inches placed at an angle to hold up the insulation keeping it from drooping.

    You can choose either a fiberglass batt ( very common and reasonably priced ) or a rock ( mineral ) wool batt.( not as common and a bit more pricey )

    Kathy ... your welcome.

    Just make sure to wear dust masks , gloves , saftey glasses when working with the fiberglass .... it gets very itchy while handling.
