It sounds like if it is in the ceiling the there is probably excessive movement in the joists above. Is there a room above this were there could be a lot of weight such as a bathroom? or a room where kids might be jumping around? Its also possible that the structure has been weakened by someone cutting out joists for plumbing or something like that. You may need to strengthen the structure to stop the cracking. This however would be a big job. If you are confident the structure is sound and it is just excessive flex you could maybe try a faux finish or real or fake tin ceiling tiles to hide the crack.

these cracks where in the room are they cracking? cracks are usually caused by how the drywall was hung. you should never have a crack running up or down from the corner of a window or a door or within approx 4 inches of a corner of a window or a door. if the crack is out on a flat wall then my feeling would be that one of the sheets didn't break at the center of the stud and was barely catching the stud, and this would allow movement or vibrations that would cause the crack and at the windows you don't break at the corners of the window because these are high stress points where you see building movement and they will crack.

if either of these are the problem then the suggestion would be to tear out a scetion of the rock for these areas and rehang
