Default 2 pipes for cold water to water heater?

    Hello,

I recently bought a water softener that I am planning on installing. When I looked in the utility closet, there are 2 cold water pipes coming up through the floor. These are connected together (with a valve above the connection) and go into the cold water supply inlet of the water heater.

My question is, why is there 2? Can I use one of these to hook the water softener into?

    thanks!

I can't see what you have but will guess that you have a cold water feed coming in and is split with one pipe going to the WHO and the other the cold feed to the fixtures in the house.
