    Default Electric Hot Water Heater

Have city water and replaced electric hot water heater in Nov. 2007. Should it be drained periodically? Noticed that muddy looking water came out when I accidentally pulled the relief valve momentarily.

I believe that most manufacturers recommend draining at least a few gallons off the bottom of the tank yearly to flush out the sediment...as well as opening the T&P (relief) valve momentarily to ensure there is no sediment build up there either. If you still have the owners manual from the heater, check that...it should list the required maintenance for your model.
