Cool is there suppose to be a vent on the side of my cooling system in my basement

im putting drywall up in my basement and as such am enclosing the hot water heater & furnance stuff. So, there was a vent directly on the side of the cooling system blowing air out, so i covered it up with a piece of sheet metal because it woulda been blowing about 12inches into my drywall. so my question is am i suppose to have a vent there or not? thank you

I guess whoever designed you system wanted some conditioned air in the basement. Generally not a bad idea. I don't know that it is "needed".
Of more concern is that by putting up walls so close to the furnace & water heater are you limiting combustion air to the units and possibly creating an unsafe situation.
