When it comes to painting, a labor intensive trade, it doesn't pay to economize.

Getting the best quality paint is terribly important and essential. You simply don't want to repeat the job, if the cause was poor quality paint.

The reason for the problems in mixing with the new no VOC tints is that a couple of them are much stronger - blue and green. If there is no blue or green in the formula, the old formula can be used.

If the color was a stock formula from the color cards, the companies recalculated the old formulas to reproduce the true color. If however, it was originally a custom matched color, the old formula is not useable. In this case, the computer spectrometer will make a new formula by reading a sample of the old paint. These are normally fairly accurate, but often need a little tweaking. This is where experience and a little color theory comes in. If the person behind the counter has been there for several years, you will probably get a decent result. If not - good luck!

What you are saying makes sense if all you have an interest in is new customers, but what about those who bought your products in good faith and now are faced with painting an entire house because you, the manufacturer, didn't want to take the time or make the effort to transition the old custom formula to the new one? This seems like the manufacturer made a conscious decision to cast some of its old customers aside. So be it. There are plenty of paint companies still in business and they are the ones which will get my dollars.

Most paint stores now use computer controlled mixing, and computer matching.

Because this thread has deviated so far from the OP's original question and some posts are bordering on libel I am lock the thread.
