    Default attic stairs too steep

Our attic stairs in our 110 yr old house are dangerously steep. The treads are 7.5 inches wide and the risers are 8 inches. I've already fallen twice but would like to use the finished but unheated room up there. Any suggestions?

Other than rebuilding the stairs which would be a major undertaking and may not be possible, I would make sure there are two sturdy handrails on each side and put an abrasive or nonslip material at the edge or nosing of each tread. Make sure the lighting is good and take your time when going up or down.
I remember the stairs to the third floor of my grandmothers turn of the century house were so steep that as a kid I had to crawl up the stairs. I was probably 5 or 6 at the time.
