Default meriwed - fireplace door leaks smoke

Suffered through our 1st winter in the late 60's house with awful smoke smell when burning fireplace. It is a double sided unit with one side in family room and other in living room. We have discovered that the brick on living room side is not flat and smooth and the glass doors do not fit tight.
We really would like to know how to remedy this so we can avail ourselves of the warmth the fireplace provides.

    Thanks for any help

Most hardware stores and wood stove retailers have replacement fire resistant rope that is used to chink around doors and glass on fireplaces and stoves. You'll want the size that is slightly thicker than the gap you're trying to fill.
