I have a 104 y.o. home and my boyfriend and I want to remodel the home starting with the attic to make it as energy efficient as possible without having it cost us an exorbitant expense. We need to know what is the best way to insulate an old attic. The roof rafters are rough cut 2 x 6's spaced between 13 and 16 inches on center. The roof is a slate roof. There are no cross ties or bracing in the attic to support the slate roof or heavy snow load.
We would like some guidance as to installing some cross ties and bracing to the floor joists and what would be the best insulation to use in the attic. Also, the attic is used for storage.
Would eave vents work along with the strofoam inserts to get some ventilation? There are small vents at either end of the attic walls
Would be better to insulate the attic floor or between the roof rafters?
Your prompt response to this request is appreciated. Thank you.
