Default the trouble with nice big old floor grates

Hello - we just bought a great old house and though I love the metal floor and wall/baseboard (?) grates, I know that our 18-month-old won't be able to resist dropping toys and all sorts into them. Can anyone recommend something to cover the grates from the inside? Maybe window screen or something - and how could I attach it?
Thanks so much for your time,
    Andrea Runne

Hardware cloth works well. Regular screen will plug with dirt pretty quickly.

Thanks Bob - hmm, I wouldn't have thought of that, that regular screen will plug. Do you have any suggestions for how to attach the hardware cloth to the grates?
    Thanks so much!

Sure. Take the floor grille to the hardware store. They can cover the bottom of the grille (like a mold) so when you insert the grille in the opening it will stay in place. I don't know how to explain it more clearly, sorry.
