Default Covering line of paint where trim used to be

I removed some insulation board and corresponding base molding from a wall this summer. Now, I have a built up line of old paint that is 14 feet long on the ceiling and is 1 1/2" from the wall. The plaster finish has a sand texture. Is there a way to fill in the area or do I have to sand it all down and try to match with texture spray paint?

Hide it with a crown molding. Quick, simple, elegant. Beyond that it would be scraping, floating, and retexturing.
