    Default Antique doorknob problems

I just finished redoing my bathroom and the doors and I began the last task. Stripping the hardware on the door that the last owner just painted over. PROBLEM...As I started scratching off the ugly pink paint on the big square metal pieces, the pink came off but so did the black and it's silver underneath. Isn't it supposed to be black? Why did that come off? I thought that old antique look was black, not nickel silvery looking! Can I get the black back and how do I keep from doing that on the rest of the doors in my house?

My guess is you have steel hinges that were originally painted. Strip and spray with black paint.
