    Default waterproofing wood?

I bought an antique wooden cabinet with a veneer finish and a gorgeous Talavera pottery Mexican vessel sink, and I hope to combine the two to create a unique bathroom vanity. My brother is all set to drill a hole in the top of the cabinet to put the plumbing.
But here's the problem: he told me I need to waterproof the top of the cabinet or I'll ruin the wood veneer. Any ideas on what kind of product would best do the job? He thought maybe some type of marine varnish.
    Please advise.
    Thanks Anne

One thing to remember though is it needs to be fished on all sides and the edges of the cut out.

This room will have a washer, dryer, toilet, and sink. And I have no kids, so there won't be a lot of splashing around.
Any products you like for finishing?

    Also, what is fishing?

    Thanks
    Anne
