Cast Iron steam heaters around base of floor
We would like to put a French Door out to a patio from a room that has cast iron steam heaters around the base of the floor. How do we accomplish this. The room in question is on slab. There is not a basement beneath.
Re: Cast Iron steam heaters around base of floor
Are you sure those are steam heat radiators---they look like hot water (hydronic) baseboard convectors.
Could you provide the model number and brand of the boiler--does the boiler have a glass tube in front to indicate the water level??
If the heat is steam, is it a two-pipe system for each radiator, or a one-pipe system for each radiator??
Since you have a slab in that room, it would require cutting into the concrete to some extent, but it could be done.
You already have a lot of glass in that room, which makes it costly to heat---adding a french door, especially glass, would add some additional costs to your heating bill.
Why not consult the Yellow Pages under "Heating Contractors" & have one or two installers come over & give you a free estimate of the cost & time factors.
The site below has several types of convectors (designed for hot water) that are used with french doors---click onto "residential products", then floor vectors, etc.
