We moved into an 1800's farmhouse. We found a hand hewn sandstone hearth as well as a block hearth. The block one in the kitchen has water damage, the single block hearth in the living room is perfect but needs sealed. Both share a split chimney. The old cast iron cook rod is still in the chimney but no longer attached. A few of the center stones have fallen and the entire chimney needs new mortar. We plan to use the living room side as a wood fireplace. In the kitchen we would like to use the block hearth to set a small cast iron cook stove on and vent the pipe through the existing chimney. The chimney has never had a top cover and that is something we have to address before either one can be used. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We have also found large hand hewn blocks we suspect at one time were used to shore up and keep the critters from getting under the house. Currently there are many areas that are open.
Thanks in advance,
Kiltman
