The brown wire you're talking about is thermostat wire, you can pick it up at just about any hardware or big box store. It runs from the unit to the thermostat. I would stick with the right wire because telephone wire has different colors and can cause some confusion for service people.

What kind of wire would that be?

    What would I cal it?

I doubt anybody from Home Depot and Lowes would know if I tried to explain to them.

Yep ... like JLM says .... ask for thermostat cable.
I kinda goofed in my post ... you probably have 5 conductors .... and the thermostat cable conductors are usually 20 or 18 gage.

Geez ... you got that right.

A heat pump for residential is extremely rare around these parts .... I've only heard of one home that has one.

This is one of those things I'm learning about on this forum.

Ok, I gotta bring this back alive....

    I replace the wire today.
Originally, I have 4 conductor wires, red, blue, white and green.
The wire I just replace has 5 conductors, red, blue, white, green and yellow.
I just leave yellow wire disconnect.

Anyway, A/C works, fan works but no heat.

    Could I have bad thermostat?

Is there a way to by pass thermostat, to check for heat?

You only need two tools in life - WD-40 and Duct Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the Duct Tape.
