    Exclamation Strange Humming Sound

I woke up to a strange humming sound emanating from the wall. I went down into the basement and found that the sound is coming from a box with this brown do-hickey attached to it. The sound comes and goes in a regular pattern.

Any ideas what this is and why it's making this sound??? (I have no idea where the attached brown wires are running to)

That is an old transformer, to supply DC current to some accessory like a doorbell, electric lock, dictaphone system, intercom, or what-have-you. If it has recently started humming very loudly, it's about to fail. They eventually develop a short in the coil, overheat, catch fire, etc.
    It will sort itself out.

Should I just remove the transformer?...

It is a transformer providing low voltage AC. The buzzing is usually caused by the metal laminations loosening up. If you can find the rating plate you can replace it if the noise bothers you. However it may last for years before you have a problem other than noise.

Yep --- as Jack posted and more than likely it's the transformer supplying low voltage AC for the door bells.
I can't recall any catastrophes as suggested earlier.

I agree with the others, it's a transformer, likely for the doorbell.

It looks like a bad doorbell chime transformer to me as well. Its a pretty shady set-up anyways. When you get a new one, but it an its own box.

I don't believe you can tell a transformer is bad by its look, and installing it in its own box adds nothing to its function. A brand new transformer can also buzz.

I agree with Jack --- besides, it's pretty common for door bell transformers to be attached similar to the picture .
Not sure why suggesting it's own box ?
