Default What style is our Indiana home?

    Items to note.
    Traced back to 1866.
It has two front doors, but doesn't appear to ever have been a double.
Four-square floor plan, although the old dining room was made into two rooms... bathroom and a small office.
    Kitchen on back of house.
    Large parlor doors
    Transom windows between rooms.
Farily simple woodwork. Square posts on staircase.
There is fancier woodwork behind the aluminum soffets and trim that I plan to restore someday.

I'd also like to know what type of roofing material would be correct or original on it... We're due for a new roof, and I'd like to look into taking it back to what it originally had.

    Thanks for any info.

Most people would call this farmhouse style because they are often found on farms or in farming communities. The simple rectangular box with the front center gable is the main feature of the house. You have Victorian gingerbread typical of the time.

I would guess it's an American Gothic Victorian that has been updated. Depending on your location the original roof was either slate or shake.

    Thanks for the input guys.
I think I'm leaving towards the American Gothic Victorian also.
According to some roofers that came to give quotes on repairing the storm damage, our house most likely did indeed have shakes originally.
We will soon be tearing off the aluminum soffiting, and ugly junk and scraping and painting the original woodwork. Any opinions on how to deal with the gutters? Thought about copper or galvanized steel to replace these generic aluminum ones.
