    Question Water Softener

Our home was built in the early 80's. We are on our own well and have hard water. We want to install a water softener but have been told that to install a new softener unit on old pipes it will destroy the existing pipes. This due to the build up in them. Help...I need a non-partial explanation. Is it possible to go ahead and put the softener unit in?
