Porch facelift - square cladding over round columns?
I'd like to make our Victorian porch columns and railing match our Craftsman interior, and I think cladding the columns (using the rabbit joints and trim that this article shows) would be a more cost-effective solution than replacing them. Structurally, the round columns are in great shape, but aesthetically, we'd like them to be square to match the lines and angles throughout the rest of the house. Would it be possible to clad them with rabbited 2x6s? The cladding will be anchored at the soffit, railing, and deck - will that be enough to keep it structurally sound and prevent twisting? The existing round columns have a very slight taper - will that matter?
