Proper water temperature is necessary for good cleaning and drying performance. The hot water heater should be set to deliver at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit to the dishwasher.

    Here's a pretty good link : http://searchwarp.com/swa8094.htm

Running hot water to the dishwasher will greatly reduce the amount of energy used by the dishwasher to heat the water. Your water heater is designed to do one thing - heat water. But your dishwasher is designed to only bring the water temperature up to a higher temperature than it receives from the water heater generally 20-30 degrees higher). If it has to heat the water from straight cold (say 70-90 degrees higher), it is going to use A LOT of energy to do so, and probably wont clean as well.
