    Unhappy Refinish pine stairs

Help. The builder installed a pine staircase in my home even though he was told we were not carpeting the stairs and the home has oak hardwood. There is marking on the stairs where the builder wrote on the stairs. His fix was to stain the stairs. I would like to sand and refinish so the stairs would look better with my oak floors.

Is there anything I can do?

Pine is a soft wood that stain penetrates, it would take a lot of sanding to remove all the stain on pine. You might try stripping the finish off and bleaching the wood.

when we tried to finish pine direct it came out blotchy. they said putting a sealer finish on it first would help, it didn't.

mabe you could replace the treads with oak to match your floors and paint the pine risers and trim.
