Best Wood for Porches and Exterior Stairs
I need to rebuild much of my porch due to mostly due to rot and I have a few questions.
1. The footing that my wood columns sit on is rotted completely through. What is best to replace the footing with? Can I use a "Trex" type material?
2. I may need to replace the tongue and groove flooring and I hear douglas fir is best. Is 5/4 stock overkill? What is best dimension for floor?
3. I hear most builders use pressure treated/wolmanized boards for the stair treads, but I'd like to use douglas fir because I can stain it (and also stain the flooring. Is douglas fir inferior in any way to pressure treated?
Thanks in advance for people's help.
