Question Feedback for stair tread replacement

I am just about to start planning for replacing my entry way stair treads after I remove the carpeting and plywood. My initial thought is to use white oak but it seems that the most readily available material from local suppliers is red oak......can anyone give me a notion as to why this would be the case?

Local availability, local preference, hard to say. All species are not always available in all areas or from all suppliers. Shop around to other suppliers and see what they've got. Don't forget to check with lumber suppliers who cater to woodworkers. If they don't have what you need, they may be able to get it. Talk to a stair builder, they may be able to custom mill the materials you desire.
I suffer from CDO ... Its like OCD, but in alphabetical order, LIKE IT SHOULD BE!!!
