Default A New Basement Under An Old House

Is it possible/realistic/feasable to add a basement to a 1950's home in Tulsa, OK? If not, can I place a entry to a storm shelter under the floor? Which is cheaper? What is the going price of a retro fit basement? Details, I need details!

    Thanks!

    Is it possible ?
More than likely yes ----- sight unseen

    Is it realistic and feasable?
    Can't say.

depends on many factors --- soil conditions , restrictions , elevations , real state prices , accessiblity , size of home ..... to name a few.

Bottom line ---- the house will need to be raised , all sewer lines disconnected , excavation to dig out for the basement , depending on what the foundation will be --- poured concrete or blocks , perimeter drains, new sewer lines , lowering the house , back fill and grading.

Cost will be higher than if there were no home there.---- probably in the neighbourhood of $35K- $45K +

As for the storm shelter ---- I'm guessing you would have access from outside?

It would be a lot cheaper since this would only require excavating for a stairway , cutting a doorway into the concrete ,installing a door and frame , the stairs and retaining wall and drain.

As canuk points out, expense is relative to many things. If all you're looking for is a storm shelter, then you don't need to excavate a full basement, which would require everything canuk covered. Talk with local foundation contractors and more specifically, contractors with experience in creating storm shelters to discuss your options and expenses with them.

You could also consider an above ground storm shelter. Check these out

Ah --- perhaps I misread the Op's question about the storm shelter part.
I thought there was an existing one.

I read it to be that he has neither and wants something. Of the two, the shelter should be cheaper, easier, and less invasive to both structure and life while being created.

The Op also failed to mention if the house is on a foundation or a slab.

Well it would make a significant difference in Canuk's quote.

He's also talking Canadian frog skins, not American green backs, so he's a bit off anyway ...
