    Question Painted Stair Risers

What would be the best type of wood to use for stair risers that will accept and retain paint the best? This is for an interior application.
What type of paint...latex or enamel would last the longest?
I also want to paint the Balusters as well. They currently are stained. Any ideas?

I would use poplar, I don't like MDF and wouldn't have it in the house. I prefer oil based gloss or semi gloss enamel, it dries with a hard finish.

I agree with Jack on this one. I've used MDF for trim, and although paints up nice, I wouldn't use it again.

You mentioned the balisters are stained already, Are the risers existing? If they are why not skin them with 1/4" plywood birch,poplar,etc..... Just a thought
