I just bought an unfinished Mahogany front door. I want to keep it close to the natural color so I was planning on using Minwax natural oil based stain, followed by 3 coats of of Minwax Helmsman spar urethane on the exterior, 2 on the interior. I would re-evaluate in the spring to see if other coats of the Spar urethane should be added.

I am wondering if the initial stain choice of Minwax oil based natural is OK for a starting coat on an exterior door? I would assume it is, since it will be covered with 3 coats of spar urethane.

I live in west Michigan and the door will be facing North, so the sun exposure shouldn't be too bad.

Thanks in advance!
