Hi Weezer 123, let me be the first to welcome you.

I've found it's a great place to share one's knowledge and experiences and learn from others.

I think just the opposite may be truer, if outlet boxes are over filled.
But, if code was followed the number of JB's does not matter.

You have to wonder why there are so many junction boxes ,are they over stuffed ,are they accessable?

What about the cost of rewiring a 50+ year old house if the house is relatively small - about 1200sq ft? in the state of MS? We would like to get in shape to a possible sale in a year or so. Especially like to start in the kitchen. Not sure how or where to start.

As was previously stated, you need to survey what you now have to see if "total rewire" fits your budget. If you're going to sell it soon and nothing is giving you trouble you may just want to install GFCI's in the baths and kitchen, which is pefectly legal, if you apply the labels provided (w/ GFCI's), to any GFCI protected receptacles with no equipment ground.
