    Default Dry Wall strapping

I just finished watching "Ask This Old House" Program 601. Tom fixed a drywall break.
The drywall was attached to "strapping" which was running perpendicular to the joists.
I have only seen drywall attached directly to the joist.
Why is strapping used? How is it installed and fastened to the joist?

Sounds like you're describing "hat track", which is used to isolate the drywall from the framing for noise reduction. I've seen it used on ceilings between downstairs and upstairs apartments and condos.
