    Question Cutting 4 by 4s

My neighborhood subdivision is looking at replacing our mailboxes. The current mailboxes have 4 by 4 posts and 4 by 6 side arms. What is the best tool for cutting 4 by 4s? Table saws, radial arm saws and circular saws specifications list 3 1/8" as max cut. Mitre saws look like a possible solution. The guy at Lowes' said a reciprocating saw was best, but they don't appear powerful enough. Thanks for any help.

A sawzall is certainly powerful enough to cut a 4x4 or 6.
A circular saw will work too. Just make your first cut, then rotate the post 90 degrees then cut again and rotate & cut again.

A good hand saw would work fine and save you a trip to the health club for a workout!

    Define "best".

Best in terms of portability from one site to another, in terms of money invested, cutting the lengths ahead of time, cutting the posts off after they're installed, speed, ease of use......etc. ???

It's usually a compromise because no one tool is always best in all situations.

How about beavers, woodchucks, or trained carpenter ants?

The most common means of cutting a 4x is as ed21 suggests, with a skilsaw - cut/roll/cut/roll/cut. If you've got the other implements that have been suggested, they all work fine too.
