What type of windows do you have now - wood, aluminum, casement. sash, slider? Each type of window requires a different style screen and attachment. As a DIY project, building screen frames and screening them is a relatively easy task if you're reasonably handy and have the necessary tools to do the job.

The trick is getting good materials, something you won't find at a big box. Big Boxes carry a non-standard sized metal frame material typically with plastic corner inserts. While this may not seem a big deal, it is when you need to repair an existing frame made with industry standard frame and hardware, or need to repair a frame made with this material and can no longer get the parts to do so.

Buying the materials you need from a glass supplier would be the way to go, however the cost difference between the materials alone and just letting them build/repair the screens is minimal - also taking into account your time and efforts to do the work yourself.

The DIY savings here just aren't worth it. And DO get the metal corners; the plastic ones are junk! Consult a local glass supplier and get them to make the screens for you; prices vary so shop around. Installation hardware will be availlable from them as well making it a one-stop operation.

A few times I've acquired old over-sized screens at yard sales and cut them down, which may be the cheapest route overall. To do this you'll need a "spline roller" and possibly new spline(if the old spline is too hard or brittle); both are cheap and readily availlable. Just be careful not to let the spline roller jump out of the groove as you use it, piercing the screen, and be sure the new spline is the right diameter as it comes in different sizes.
