    Default sander problems

I have an older Porter Cable 5" random orbital sander that is out of control. It speeds up and slows down, then speeds up again. What should I I check, replace and/or fix?
    Thanks.

I don't want to replace it, I want to fix it. Thanks.

I was wondering if there is one component of the sander that controls the motion of the pad, to keep it from spinning too quickly. It will be working fine, then it will rev up and basically take off spinning. The motor works fine, as does the switch, cord, etc. Do the brushes control the speed?
    Thanks.

Problem solved for $2.00. It was the tension ring under the pad.
