Default Removing paint build-up on fancy door molding

I have some antique door frame molding that I would like to recycle and install in my home. However, there are many layers of paint which has obscured the beauty of the delicate carvings--swags of flowers, vases, etc. My contractor said that he is not sure how to handle anything with that much detail. This came out of a mansion in the Bronx, and would really top off my recent renovation (which I had to do because of a burst pipe in the ceiling which destroyed much of my home).
    Thanks,
    Paula

Use a heat gun to soften and loosen the paint then scrap it off, whats left can then easily be stripped with paint remover.

"delicate carvings--swags of flowers, vases, etc."

These may or may not be carvings. They could be composition or compo for short. Paint removal could destroy the ornament's detail, if you'r not careful.

Read this for information about compo & removing paint from it.
