Default applying thinset on entire wall as recommended in article

In the article Tiling around the tub it recommends, " to ensure a strong, long-lasting bond for the new tiles, Ferrante goes one step further and trowels thinset mortar over the entire wall."
How do you ensure the wall stays flat? How thick do you make the layer of thinset?

You screed it just like you do concrete floors or sidewalks.

are you saying that I use a board the width of the wall? To maintain the flatness, thus the thickness of the thinset do I use a level?

You put a straight edge on each side, fill the center with thinset, and drag a straight edge down the two edge pieces. that makes the thinset level. The thickness will depend on the thickness of the two edge pieces. This method also takes care of bowed or curved walls for a straight surface to mount your tile.

what are the guidelines for choosing the trowel. I have a 1/4 by 3/16 v cut and 1/8 x 1/8 x 1/8 sq. The tile is 8x12 ceramic. Is it best just use the mortar or the mastic. The mastic sound easier.

Generally, you use the thinset on floors and the mastic on walls. Which ever you use it should tell, you in the instructions for use, what size trowel to use.
