Default best underlayment for hardwood floors

I've read about using luan, hardie backer or regular plywood for an underlayment. Any suggestions as to which is the best product to use? I've read that luan is not as sturdy and doesn't make the best underlayment....

    any suggestions?
    thanks

For hardwood flooring you should use either plywood or OSB.
