    Default parging schist

Our 1800's basement walls are made of very porous schist stone held together with what looks to be dirt, perhaps mixed with lime? It is constantly crumbling and we would like to parge it for the first time. What will stay on the best? Moisture is limited to pretty extreme rains where water does work its way minimally through a couple of locations in the walls. Any advice?

As I understand parging, it's an extremly thin coat and I would think you would need a stable solid base. I would think a better way would be to build a form and pour concrete up next to the walls.
