We have a 1960's home with a disgustingly ugly three-sided fireplace - well, actually it's just framed out for a fireplace - maybe there was one there at one time. There is brick all around on the three sides, and granite surrounds around it about 18 inches off the floor that act as kind of a "bench". At any rate - it just takes up lots of space and is RIGHT in the middle of our living room/kitchen upstairs (it is a rambler with a walkout basement - there is also another fireplace downstairs directly below this one). I believe the chimneys for the two run side by side in the wall....How do we remove the one upstairs without losing the chimney, etc for the one downstairs?
