Quartersawn oak or flat grain fir?
In the Jan/Feb issue, the article "In Fine Detail" discussed how the owners love the quartersawn oak trim in their house. Now, knowing full well how popular quartersawn oak was at the time of their home's construction, I'm looking at the trim I can see on the pages and wondering if it's really flat grain fir, which was one of the standard wood types at the time and really looks like their trim. Our house has trim that looks an awful lot like theirs; we originally thought it was qtrsawn oak but as we did more research we now think it's flatgrain fir - there are no flake/ray patterns like oak, and it's not heavy or hard enough to he oak. It also looks a lot like the few pieces of fir we've bought new to replace a couple missing pieces. Anyone know for sure what their wood trim is? And how can I be sure what ours is?
