Default Heat loss from kitchen stove vent

HI, We have a stove vent that vents directly out the roof. As the weather has turned cold, I have noticed that when the wind blows I can feel a breeze coming down through the vent. When inspecting the roof vent, I also can feel significant heat flowing up through the vent. Apparently the vent is about a 12 inch vent fully open all the time, with only a rain hood cap. Do you have ideas on how to eliminate this terrible heat loss yet allow the vent to work the few minutes per week we actually need it. Thanks, Chuck Adams Placitas New Mexico

The roof vent should at least have a damper otherwise you should install a spring loaded backdraft damper in the pipe near the exhaust fan.
