This study did a good job on explaining the risks.

Only one sample (Azoles Bahia) failed the sample, but the conclusions were eye opening. They recomended envioromental monitoring where granite mateials are used inside homes or anyplace that people had direct access to the material. The studies authors also warn of serious economic and social issues if the stone industry doesn't stop the practice of using different names for the same stone, as a simple mistake could result in a high radiation content granite being used inside a home.

Other studies have show as many as 25% of the tested samples failing to meet UN standards. Not safe standards, but UN standards. There is no safe level of radiation.

This site is a bit over the top, but their science is valid.

The info on the Chinese granites was interesting.

I'd get the granite tested if I were you to make sure it is one of the safer granites. There are plenty of them available.
yup thats why there are all kinds of warning lables on granite because it is so toxic, oh wait there isn't everyone on the internet can post anything and claim expertise, I haven't seen any factual information proving radiation from counter tops. instead I have seen many experts make statements that these remarks were originating from products that are suffering decline as granite use increases.
the links didn't work but found their websites. it doesn't take very long reading to see the biased and false information. it would be easy to be fooled if you haven't done much research into these areas. and think about this a minute who would benefit if granite was found dangerous to use for counter tops? quartz surfaces and solid surfaces. both who are synthetic not natural products solid surfaces are basically a dense plastic and we all know that the manufacture of plastics has a negative impact, and quartz surfaces are quartz in an acrylic resin base. acrylic is also a form of plastic. also did you know that granite counter tops can be used in "green homes" because they have a low impact on the environment? not so with solid surfaces

Sorry about the links, try these

There you go, four scientific studies that prove beyond doubt that granite is radioactive, some of the studies call for enviromental monitoring if granite is used inside a home.

Can't get any clearer than that.

By the way, would not a granite shop benefit from covering up the information?

    Have a nice day.

Let's see , China , Saudi Arabia , Cyprus , etc . Do you have any studies from AMERICAN scientists ? Oh , I know . George Bush and Dick Cheney are covering it up so that their friends in the granite business can profit . Quick , somebody call Henry Waxman so they can have hearings ! We must get to the bottom of this before the elections !!!!

    Will Illinois do?
    http://solidsurfacealliance.org/file...s_of_radon.pdf

Then here is one from Cornell University,

    http://solidsurfacealliance.org/file...erspective.pdf

Bottom of page three, it mentions granite counters adding to the Radon risk of the home.

Here is the site where all of these and more can be found

    http://solidsurfacealliance.org/G-ra...on-issues.html

Yes, the site is definetly selling something and bashing granite, but as I said, their science holds up.

    DJohns,

Are you saying that these international experts are somehow suspect because they are not American?

I am a Geologist, oil feild work has been my feild of expertise. We have known for many decades that oil feild equipment can be contaminated from drilling and the oil. Face it, granite has radiation elements in it, from hundreds to thousands per parts per million.

Arguing in the face of evidence makes me wonder if your screen name should be Duh johns
