We own a 1790's house. Due to a leaky roof one of the bedroom ceiling collapsed. The attic is above it. What fell down wasn't the plaster ceiling but sheet rock ceiling. We would like to pull down the whole sheet rock ceiling to expose the plaster ceiling, but have discovered weak areas in the plaster ceiling. They move when pushed. The whole ceiling has little cracks in it. Would it be better just to put up a new sheet rock ceiling or is there a way to repair the plaster ceiling and how would we go about doing that?
Is there a way to tell how sturdy the plaster ceiling is? My concern is that if we decide to cover it back up could the plaster ceiling break apart at one point and be heavy enough to have the sheet rock fall on our heads?
Any and all advice for us do-it-yourselfers would be greatly appreciated.
